  • Up-Is Up Up and Away

Up is a recent production by Pixar Studios. I was not excited about seeing it after watching previews, it held no interest at all. I really couldn’t figure out what the story line was. But because I have kids, I was made to go see it against my better judgment. The movie starts out with a cubby little boy who doesn’t really talk meeting up with a wild and out spoken girl. The movie involves this boy and girl growing up,get married, get older, and then the woman dies. The man decides that he wants to make the dream she had as a little girl come true. Now, the movie gets funny. This very grumpy man meets up with an irritating boy that he can’t get rid of. Before you know it they are stuck together on an adventure that he had planned to take alone. The combination of the grumpy old man and the overweight, too-helpful boy makes for quite an amusing story. It gets funnier as a group of dogs come into the picture and the head dog has an automated voice box that is malfunctioning and causes this big scary dog to speak in this high pitch squeaky voice. That will make you laugh till you cry. I have to say that while I wouldn’t give this movie a top rating it is much better than I had anticipated. So, if your kids force you to watch it, you may actually enjoy it. It lifts you mood UP rather than down. It even has a few “awww” moments.

I'll be honest, I watched this movie because my cousin asked me to accompany her. Otherwise I won't be interested to watch this movie. Why? Because a grumpy-looking-old-man which I suspected as the main character, didn't look very appealing. Who wants to watch a movie about an old man? But you know what, that kind of thought only shows how shallow I was (or am), because now in my chart of "Best Animated Movie I've Ever Seen", UP is the number 1.

So what's so good about this movie it could change my mind?

First, the story. It's nothing like any other movie (even among real-person movies), very original. I can't possibly tell the whole story here, too lazy for that, but here's the major line: A grumpy old man named Carl, whose wive had passed away, trying to realize their unaccomplished dream. But then he's stumbled with Russel, a young boyscout in an unimaginable adventure. To make it even shorter, it's a mix of drama which can make you cry like a baby and a thrilling adventure which can make you laugh your ass off at the same time. Ok, that's all I have to say about the story.

Second, the graphic. What can I say? Pixar has it all. And they made Russel so cute I just want to take him home and make him my pillow!

Third? The Music. Believe me, you'll only think you're just hearing the same song all over the movie, but somehow, it sticks to your head. Simple but hits the eyes, err, I mean, the ears.

So, after my own experience, I suggest you all not to judge a movie by its poster (or whatever ugly character inside of it).
