Movie Reviews of There Will Be Blood

  • THERE WILL BE BLOOD is simply one of the great American movies. It's theme--the corruptive power of greed--isn't new, but the story of William Plainview's rise to an oil tycoon is told with such energy and dramatic force that other similarly themed films get lost in the dust. Daniel Day Lewis is as good as one would expect, but Paul Dano's performance as Plainview's rival deserved attention. Not many actors in their early 20s could act alongside Lewis and hold their own. The period detail is exact without drawing attention to itself and the brilliant cinematography captures everything in rich textures. My only complaint is with the score. It's fine on its own, but rather intrusive within the film. Thankfully, the score is used sparingly.
