Movie Reviews of The Ghost Writer

  • I recently saw Roman Polanski's The Ghost Writer. The movie itself is based on the book The Ghost, now renamed The Ghost Writer in the states by Robert Harris. The book and the movie detail the story of the ghost writer who is sent to write the memoirs of a former British prime minister who is accused of war crimes. Along the way he starts looking into what his deceased predecessor's work looking the prime minister and his wife.

The movie is not the typical thriller with a bunch of chase scenes and gun fights. It is more of a study psychological buildup aided by Alexandre Desplat's score. While Pierce Brosnan (Adam Lang) and Ewan McGregor (The Ghost) gave good performances, it was the Lady Macbeth tone of Ruth Lang (Olivia Williams) that won me over. The calculating woman who doesn't seem to give a damn about her appearance is always plotting despite her sadness and her tears. For her alone I would watch this movie, in addition to the phenomenal plot.

  • With The Ghost Writer, Roman Polanksi not only does his most assured thriller filmmaking since the mid-1990s, he also does some of his wittiest work in years.
