Movie Reviews of Step Up 3D
- Step UP 3D
hen producers of the Step Up franchise first announced that the third chapter in the urban dance saga would be filmed in 3D, that increasingly gimmicky audience-baiting tool so popular these days in Hollywood, reactions ranged from ambivalence to ridicule. I myself was rather skeptical, having been subjected to my share of hastily produced 3D monstrosities a la The Last Airbender. But after watching the film, I must concede that the trendy format actually acquits itself reasonably well in Step Up 3D. I only wish I could speak the same about the film's more traditional cinematic components, like plot, dialogue, and acting.
- Okay, I have to ask. What is with the 3D craze going on in the movie industry? I mean, it's almost like an outbreak. It's like an innovative plague that has swept across the face of the earth and slapped it. No matter where you are, you just can't ignore it. I blame James Cameron for this. Who made him King of the world?.... Well, we did. We loved Avatar too much. So, technically, it's all our fault. But that however does not change anything about how skeptical I am about the frenzy.
Ever since Avatar, almost every movie is jumping onboard the 3D wagon. And now, God forbid, the dance-movie makers have decided to join in the fun. Who wants to go to a cinema and pay 50% extra when they can buy the normal 2D ticket that promises the same quality? I mean, how different can the art of dancing be in 3D format? Well, it turns out - very! To be honest, when I went to watch STEP UP 3D, I was going in armed with low expectations. But you know what, the truth is, the movie is good. Do not pay your priceless attention too much on the plot, because there's nothing new there. It's the same recycled 'follow your dreams' concept presented in the same recycled way. But even with that, I still think it's pretty decent. The story is simple but not painful to watch. Although sometimes the acting is. The chemistry between the character Moose and his girl-best friend however deserves a special mention. But all that takes a backseat when they start dancing. And thank God there is a lot of them! I think that's one of the flaws in the first two movies. But that's definitely not the case with this latest feature. The makers have definitely raised the bar in terms of showcasing dancing on screen. I noticed two added features. One is of course the 3D enhancement. And the other is the input of sound effects with the choreography. And the result is mind-blowing! From start to finish, quality dancing is presented. And the 3D format made it even more amazing. You have to see it to believe it. And the variety is refreshing. There's even a dance set on the street that is reminiscent of the 50s era. But my personal favorite is definitely when the robot dancer took center stage in the first round. That man is not human! You have to see it. You can't go wrong. The last dance sequence alone is worth your ticket. So, if you're looking for a decent movie with super-charged dancing. Then this should be your pick. P.S I was wrong about 3D. Thank you James Cameron.
