Movie Reviews of District 9
- District 9. Just when you think "aliens come to Earth" movies have been done to death, along comes "District 9". What appears to be shaping up to be a typical aliens vs. humans flick abruptly shifts gears, becoming a bizarre, inside-out, *buddy movie* of all things. Even though it is his first movie, the director (Neill Blomkamp) skillfully plays us -- hyping expectations, then unexpectedly undercutting them. South African star Sharlto Copley does an excellent job of bringing us along through his character's ordeal. The movie's setting -- near-future South Africa -- adds a poignant undertone with the apartheid-like isolation of the aliens. Kudos must go to Exec Producer Peter Jackson for shelling out the bucks for the uniformly high production values. I smell a sequel: let's hope "District 9: The Return" doesn't rest on its laurels like the Matrix' two sequels.
- District 9:
I can not say it is a great movie, great visual effect good acting and some action. But the greatness of the movie relies on that the plot makes it look so normal, and i refer about the Humans and Aliens living together. It looks so normal do natural that in some parts of the movie you are more worried about if he will get back with his girlfriend than the aliens.
Great movie
- A Review of District 9. The Peter Jackson produced District 9 was a suprisingly refreshing take on an Alien Encounter. Set in South Africa, the Aliens, or "Prawns" are forced to live in the ghetto shanties once inhabited by native South Africans. The Aliens are vulnerable, not particularly bright, and sensitive in a humanlike way. Addicted to Cat food, these stranded Aliens trade their advanced technologies to maurading Nigerian militias for cans of kitty treats. The hero, or anti-hero if you like, is an White Afrikans named Jaspers, the nicompoop son in law of aht Multi-National United Weapons CEO. Jaspers, promoted to the unpopular job of evicting the Alien refugees into concentration camps, is exposed to a liquid formula that powers alien crafts, that has been 20 years in the making. The side effect of this exposure changes Jaspers DNA to that of the Prawns, enabling him to use otherwise inacessible Alien Weaponry. Through his own persecution Jaspers comes to sympathize with and aid the Aliens in their attempt to return to their home planet for reinforcements. I'd give this film 3 out of 5 stars for entertainment value, humor, and special effects.
