Movie Reviews of Dear John

  • Dear John is the perfect movie for those who have loved ones in the service. It grips at your heart and captures the true feelings people experience when they are separated by distance and war.
When the two main characters, John and Savannah, meet, you can feel the chemistry right away. As their relationship progresses, your heart is captured by their emotions. You feel broken inside when they must be apart after the September 11th attacks.
Although most will call this movie a chick flick, Dear John is a great date night movie. If you have ever been in love, you will be captured by this story. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good love story.

  • Dear John-Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks

I watched Dear John with my Husband yesterday. I liked the actors they chose, they fit very well into the parts. I also liked the scenery. The relationship between Savannah and John was believable, but I felt like they didn't allow it to develop in the movie. I realize they were only together two weeks before John was sent away, but I still felt like the movie could've gone more in depth.
I was disappointed with the ending and actually a little depressed. I kept wondering why Savannah would marry someone simply to take care of their child. After watching the entire movie and finally seeing Savannah and John be allowed to be together...the movie ended, leaving me disapointed. I would have liked seeing what actually became of the two.
Overall a good movie, but not the best from Nicolas Sparks. I would like to read the book to see what was left out.

  • The movie is Dear John I was very disapointed that this movie was nothing like the movie Notebook. I was really hoping for a super sobbing night.

  • "Dear John" is a recently released film starring Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum as two young people who meet in Charleston, South Carolina when Tatum's character, John, is on leave from the military. Seyfried's character, Savannah, is immediately drawn to John, despite their different backgrounds. John comes from a working class home, and was raised by an odd, mostly silent father, who collects coins obsessively, and has a hard time letting his son know that he loves him. Savannah comes from a wealthy background, and is interested in doing good in the world. She has a dream of opening a horseback riding camp for autistic kids, fueled by her love of a neighbor's son, who is autistic. John is dumbfounded when Savannah suggests that his father may be autistic, as well. After giving this idea some thought, he realizes that Savannah could be right.
John and Savannah spend a wonderful two weeks together before John has to go back for duty. He promises to end his military career soon, and return to Savannah. They also promise to keep in touch by mail. The events of 9-11 change everything, though, and John and Savannah do not get to go on with the future they planned.
I found this movie to be sweet, if a little forced, at times. It is based on a Nicholas Sparks book, and there are always a few unexpected twists in his stories. The portrayal of John's father, as someone high on the autistic spectrum, was very believable. I speak from experience, as the parent of a son with Asperger's Syndrome.
