Movie Reviews of Casino Royale

  • Casino Royale

Part of the James' Bond movie franchise, Casino Royale is a reboot of the series. The movie introduces Bond at the beginning of his career. He earns his license to kill and engages in his first mission against a banker for terrorist organizations named Le Chiffre. Bond has to foil Le Chiffre's plan to win a high stakes poker game and continue financing terrorism. He is accompanied on his mission by the beautiful and smart, Vesper Lynd, who works for the Treasury and has secrets of her own.

Daniel Craig stars as James Bond and shows great skill, portraying Bond realistically as a cold, wounded and ultimately complex character who the audience can still sympathize with. Eva Green as Vesper Lynd gives a beautiful performance.

With sharp, excellent writing, great action scenes, impressive acting and a plot that delivers, especially with its surprisingly heartwrenching conclusion, this movie is one that I really enjoyed.

The latest James Bond movie takes a step in a different direction, and it’s definitely the right direction. It starts out with a very gritty intro that strongly recalls film noir imagery, both visually and dramatically. It doesn’t retain the black and white through the film (which is good), but it does retain a slight film noir feel (which is very good).

James Bond starts out as a clumsy agent, and doesn’t get much better during the film. Both in his private life and in his job, he is searching. Now in his search lies the main flaw of the movie, but it is a very hopeful one. For the first time – although I have only seen a few Bond movies with Roger Moore, but I do feel entitled to speak my mind freely – I feel that James Bond is a character. I hope the writers retain that and make him something more than just the random action hero he has become, and I also hope that the writers will take some dialogue writing classes. The dialogue wasn’t Star Wars bad, but it could have been much better.

Performances however, were rock solid all around. Daniel Craig is turning out to be the quintessential Bond, gorgeous Eva Green was fabulous as a femme fatale (not ‘Bond girl’, she’s much better than that), and Mads Mikkelsen was a great villain. The story is, of course, pretty shallow, but deeper than the average Bond film, and well carried by the actors.

Visuals are top notch (nice use of locations), audio is great (love the title song!), and the action is superb, without using too many stupid gadgets, which Bond films have become famous for. It’s grittier and gorier than you might expect, but that’s only good in this case. In short, I could talk on and on about this movie, but it’s just one that you must see. An overall very solid film, which I highly recommend you watch in theatres, and not wait for the DVD.
