  • “Braveheart”

In 1995, a Hollywood movie raised awareness about Scottish history. It introduced the story of the nation’s greatest hero to the world. Movie audiences worldwide became aware of a Scottish matyr, patriot and a charismatic warlord.

This very movie, “Braveheart”, paid tribute to William Wallace, who has been celebrated as the first Scottish hero by many people. Fighting for the right to liberty is the central theme of the movie.

“Braveheart” tells the story of the greatest Scottish hero. It tells the story of the leading figure in one of the key events in Scottish history, the story of a man who tried to free his country and, though only a simple gentleman, succeeded in doing this for a time.

Being neither king nor noble, William Wallace had no large army at his command. With a small band of brave and determined men he would capture a castle or a town. With each success his followers grew in number. He gathered about him a tough and determined band of warriors dedicated to the task of driving all the English, military and civilian, out of Scotland.

The famous Battle of Stirling Bridge that William Wallace fought side by side with his enthusiastic army of followers, established him as the hero of Scottish resistance to the English throne as after this battle there was no longer an English army in the land and so Scotland was made a free country.
The story of the battle marks the apex of “Braveheart”.

Rather than simply being a movie, it also addressed wider political and historical issues. It proved that popular films, rather than being passively consumed, can lead into serious debate about national identities and forms of nationalism. It may be read in very different ways, it can be read in varied historical and political contexts.

But, in the end, this movie about a Scottish hero is just a good story. Pure entertainment.
