Directed by Cherien Dabis, Amreka tells the story of a woman and her son, who move to the United States to escape the turmoil of life in Palestine. Unfortunately, they've arrived just after the U.S. entered into war with Iraq, and experience discrimination. The mother, a former bank employee can only find work at a fast food restaurant. Her son is called Osama by boys in his high school class.
This movie might have elicited more sympathy earlier in this decade, but because more Americans are suffering from a failing economy, losing jobs and homes, it's hard to feel sorry for someone who is suffering the same things we are.
