Movie Review of Youth in Revolt

Director: Miguel Arteta

Cast: Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Jean Smart

Review:

Coming of the age film for Micheal Cera, “Youth in Revolt” brings to reel life our favorite teenage antagonist of the bestseller of the same name, Nick Twisp. The story is simple an outcast wants to woo a pretty and intelligent lass but his infamous reputation and her ex-boyfriend stands in his way. Arteta’s directorial venture is a fresh and funny attempt at a light hearted affair that leaves the audience with a smile and a chuckle.

Nick Twisp (Michael Cera) is a carefree teenager whose world turns upside down when he meets the lovely Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday). She’s beautiful and smart and everything which he looks for in a girl. Nick’s parents are divorced and temperamental and his mother has a string of boyfriends that add to his woes. He also faces competition from her intellectual ex-boyfriend Trent who is an eminent poet. When Sheeni rejects him he transforms into Francois Dillinger, his alter ego who is similar to him except for the cold blue eyes, a sexy and deep voice, a mustache and a playboy attitude and continues to woo her. Things go hay-wire for Nick when Dillinger’s negative shades make him a felon in the eyes of the police.

The “Youth in Revolt” does live up to the expectations raised by the hype created by the book on which it is based. Michael Cera is devilish yet lovable as a good boy gone bad in pursuit of love and lust, but it’s also high that the actor is seen in a different type of a genre as well. Portia Doubleday is an attractive and talented new find by the filmmakers and is definitely worth a watch. Arteta has assembled a hilarious and wicked comedy which would make your first movie-going experience of the year worthwhile.
