Movie Review of Did you hear about the Morgans
Director: Marc Lawrence
Cast: Hugh Grant, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sam Elliot, Mary Steenburgen
Review:
All those who have heard about “Did you hear about the Morgans?” would agree it’s not worthy of being talked about, not for the right reasons at least. A sloppy attempt at romantic comedy by Lawrence, the movie fails to tickle the funny bone and witnesses an almost chemistry between the lead pair.
The story is about an estranged too-busy-to-care Manhattan couple Meryl and Paul Morgan (Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant) whose lives becomes topsy-turvy when they encounter a murder and are being followed by a contract killer. In order to protect them, the feds shift them to a small safe town Wyoming. Here they meet the Wheelers, who have been assigned the task of protecting them. It is here, in the serene environs of Wyoming free from their usual hectic life that Paul and Meryl get a chance to rediscover their long forgotten love and affection for one another. The killer who’s still on their trail gets a whiff about their current location from Meryl’s P.A., which is confirmed by the couple’s visit to the doctor. The story now takes many twists and turns with Paul still trying to save his marriage and Meryl coping up with the guilt of cheating on Paul to the presence of the killer in Wyoming hunting for the duo. A rodeo stint and a close shave with death is what it takes the two to realize that they fear nothing more than losing each other. The movie ends with the two of returning home together with an adopted Chinese girl and Meryl pregnant and John wondering if the baby is Chinese too!
“Did you hear about the Morgans?” has a very predictable story which we have seen time and again in a much better presentation. Even Grant’s and Parker’s charms fail to pull the crowds to theatres owing to their fizzed out chemistry and a screenplay gone totally awry. So let’s not bother much about hearing about “Did you hear about the Morgans?” It’s not worth the effort.
