Movie Review of Brothers
Director: Jim Sheridan
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman
Review:
Like every coin has two sides, it seems like Sheridan has tried to portray that even every family has two sides. As the name suggests Brothers is a story about two brothers Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) and younger brother Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal), who are totally different from each other. While Sam is a family man who loves his wife. His brother Tommy comes back from prison and his presence is seen intimidating within the family. Just then Sam goes in for a war. After sometime he is declared dead. Then Sam’s brother Tommy gets along with Sam’s daughters and his wife (Natalie Portman).
Then there is twist in Brothers that Sam is alive somewhere in a Taliban’s prison camp. Facing harsh realities of life changes Sam completely into a different personality whereas even Tommy is changed by the support and love of Sam’s family. When Sam comes back then the issues of dominance over family and equation of love comes in between the two brothers. It drives them separate. Then when Sam and Tommy finally confront each other it is not just physical but mentally challenging as well. It is a typical melodrama but with a strong acting.
A good direction has definitely made a typical story (Brothers) look good and intense. Sheridan has succeeded in portraying the fact that how death of a family member in war effects the lives of the other family members. Though Brothers is inspired by Susanne Bier Film but has strongly over shadowed it by intense performances given by its lead. The focus of Brothers is not just a typical love triangle but it sends a message which is even more deeper than that and is even more intense.
