Movie Review of A Christmas Carol
Director: Robert Zemeckis
Cast: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Cary Elwes, Colin Firth
Review:
Be it astounding special effects or spectacular performances by the lead actors, a Charles Dickens work just cannot be molded in another form. This time Zemeckis tries to present “A Christmas Carol” in a 3-D animated format with some new tricks up his sleeve. The cast is an ensemble of some very talented actors like Jim Carrey and Gary Oldman. The story is the same touching tale of a miser realizing the importance of generosity overnight when he is visited by three uninvited guests.
Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) is a stingy and surly old man who hates almost everything and everyone around him except his wealth. A day before Christmas he shouts on his clerk Bob Cratchit (Gary Oldman) when he asks for a day off and spurns an invitation to a Christmas dinner from his nephew Fred (Colin Firth). On the same Christmas Eve he is visited by the spirit of his deceased business partner Marley who advices him to mend his greedy ways else he would be condemned to a terrible fate after death. Marley also tells him that he would be visited by three spirits who would help him realize his mistakes before it is too late. The three spirits the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas future visit him one by one. He is shown what blunders he committed in the past, how he is ruining the present for himself and his underpaid clerk and the gloomy future he is heading to.
Maybe it is because of the profound sentimental value of the source material and some amazing technological trickery used by the filmmakers “A Christmas Carol” definitely promises some magical moments. Jim Carrey’s wonderful portrayal of seven different characters is definitely worth a watch though the spectacular use of perfect-capture technology might outshine the actor’s performance.
