Movie Review of 2012

Director: Roland Emmerich

Cast: John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet

Review:

Emmerich just cannot get over his love for bringing the end of the world to the silver screen in more ways than one. So his new venture “2012” is also similar in presentation and theme to his previous expeditions. According to the Mayans, the world will be destroyed in 2012 following a series of geological cataclysms. The prophecy begins to turn true and some parts of the earth witness massive earthquakes and tsunamis. Its time for the earthlings to act fast before their world is engulfed by the sea of destruction.

In 2010 a top-secret project is launched in order to prevent mankind from vanquishing forever following a series of threats of geological disasters and natural calamities that will be triggered by neutrino activity observed in an Indian copper mine. Four hundred thousand people are selected to be saved by arks being built in the Himalayas and tickets for the same are sold at a billion euros per individual. The plot follows a struggle of Los Angeles writer Jackson Curtis to save his family with the help of a map that leads to the ark project given to him by a hermit living in Yellowstone National Park. While earth is being torn apart by earthquakes and drowned by massive tsunamis, Jackson tries his best to fly his family to safety even though it means traveling half the world.

For many 2012 would just mean a déjà vu with “Independence Day” and “Day After Tomorrow” but the movie does have some amazing edge-of-the-seat- thrills to offer. Maybe the people who love larger than life special effects in their movie would take a liking to 2012 but those looking for a meaty script will be disappointed. The movie’s scorecard reads average mainly due to its lacking in substance, insipid dialogues and dry performances.
